Known for his passion, dedication, and love of aviation, Denny May, a life member of the CAHS, and son of famous Edmonton pilot Wilfrid ‘Wop’ May, passed away suddenly at the age of 86 on Saturday October 3, 2021. Denny was a lifelong Scout, having spent a career serving Scouts Canada as executive director for Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
Denny was a long-time volunteer with Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame, a member of the Edmonton Flying Club, an aviation historian and an avid storyteller. He worked continually to keep the legacies alive of his father and other Canadian aviation heroes.
Denny had been involved with a film set to premiere at the Edmonton International Film Festival. The film is a documentary in tribute to, Wop May and his many accomplishments in aviation. Denny passed away only 24 hours before the film he pushed to have created was to be shown. To honour his commitment to preserving Edmonton aviation history and the history of aviation heroes, the director dedicated the film to Denny.
The documentary titled Blind Ambition: The Wop May Story, won the Jury Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the Festival. The news story highlighting the documentary and Denny’s contribution can be viewed here.
