RCAF 100 New Brunswick Banner Project 1924-2024
Produced by
The CAHS New Brunswick (Turnbull) Chapter The RCAF 100 banner concept developed over a cup of tea between Harold E. Wright, Turnbull Chapter Secretary, and Eileen Boyd, a Turnbull member whose husband, the late Gordon Boyd, served during the Cold War in the 1950s. The third member of the banner committee is Greg Boudreau, Treasurer of the Turnbull Chapter. |
Eileen Boyd (left) and Harold E. Wright, two of the three originators of the RCAF 100 New Brunswick Banner project. The banner recognizes the national service of Eileen's husband, Cpl Gordon R. Boyd who was a member of the RCAF from 1951 to 1958. (via Harold Wright)

The design was done by Jim Belliveau, the recently retired RCAF graphic designer at 4 Wing (CFB Cold Lake, AB). The design includes a background of aircraft of the RCAF, as well as the Squadron crests for 403 (City of Calgary) and 410 (City of Saint John) Squadrons. Both Squadrons received the Freedom of the City of Saint John at the request of the CAHS New Brunswick (Turnbull) Chapter.
The banners are 4 feet (1.22 m) high and include an image of the aviator which is 3 feet (0.91 m) high. The include the rank, name, decorations, place of birth and dates or RCAF service. For those born outside of NB, their place of residence in NB is also listed.
The banner program was launched on 09 November 2022 at the M. Gerald Teed School in Saint John, the site of our Wade-Myles Aviation Park, developed by the Turnbull Chapter in 2012.
Nominations were sought through both traditional and electronic means using print and social media. One hundred and fifty nominations were received, and a committee of six selected the one hundred.
The banners will hang in 41 locations throughout the Province. Special 403 and 410 Squadron banners will be presented to both Squadrons as well as the Cities of Calgary and Saint John. At publication time, 403 Sqn is based at CFB Gagetown (NB) with CH-146 Griffon helicopters and 410 Sqn is based at Cold Lake (AB) with CF-188 Hornet fighters.
Two additional special banners were done to recognize the Royal Canadian Air Cadets in the Province and also to a former crew member of the Lancaster KB882 currently being restored at Trenton. The CAHS New Brunswick Chapter played a small part in the salvage of KB882.
The banners were printed by Dantech Print Signs on Rothesay Avenue in Saint John.
This banner project was supported by Irving Oil. Their founder, 2nd Lieutenant K.C. Irving, served with the RFC Canada and the RAF during the First World War.
