The Halifax Project
The Latest News

Report and Photos by Karl Kjarsgaard - Curator BCMC and
Director - Halifax 57 Rescue
The team at Bomber Command Museum of Canada are continuing their recovery of Halifax bombers with a funding drive to support their return trip to Sweden this year. The team plans to return to Sweden in June-July for two weeks to recover more of the Halifax HR871.

To see all of the recovery efforts and work that has been accomplished on HR871 in 2021, Karl Kjarsgaard has shared their YouTube video. To watch, please click here.
While the Halifax aircraft has been submerged in the Baltic Sea for almost 80 years, it is still in great condition. In August, the team recovered the complete Halifax tailwheel strut-tire-wheel pictured here.  At its location in the Baltic the water is 80% freshwater and 20% saltwater.

All recovered parts of the aircraft spend weeks in a freshwater swimming pool in a Swedish warehouse to cleanse and protect the components from any residual corrosion. Currently all recovered parts are undergoing this process before coming to Canada for the rebuild.
Bomber Command have also launched a brand-new Rebuildshop for the Halifax re-construction. To view the video of the new shop, please click here.

On September 15th the team mated up for final assembly the Halifax center section – all 29’ x 8’ – the backbone of the Halifax aircraft in the shop.
This assembly was a major milestone for Bomber Command and their recovery efforts and rebuild of a Halifax, a national memorial to our RCAF Bomber boys in RAF Bomber Command.
If you would like to support the work Bomber Command is undertaking to save Halifax aircraft you can send a donation to the museum directly – please specify “Halifax Project” or donate directly to the project.
