Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame – Updates

Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame, unfortunately, has had to cancel their Induction Ceremony and Gala Dinner for 2021. With ongoing restrictions surrounding COVID-19, we are looking to 2022 with hope of being able to host an Induction Ceremony where we will be able to celebrate our 2020 Inductees and a new round of Inductees slated to be chosen this year.

As CAHF’s original Induction Ceremony date of 3 June 2021 is upon us, we would like to highlight our 2020 Inductees and the amazing accomplishments they’ve brought and continue to bring to Canadian aviation and aerospace industries.

2020 Inductees

Joe Randell – President and Chief Executive Officer of Chorus Aviation Inc, Joseph Randell has been devoted to Canadian aviation and the regional airline market for three decades. Following his MBA, which focused on the airline industry, Randell founded Air Nova, introduced the use of regional jets. After Air Nova sold to Air Canada, Randell’s next venture was Chorus Aviation, now a global player in aircraft leasing.

Bjarni Tryggvason – Bjarni Tryggvason’s passion for flight started young when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and earned his commercial pilots wings by age 20. After a degree in engineering physics, he started work at the Atmospheric Environmental Service. In 1982, Bjarni joined the National Research Council’s (NRC) Low Speed Aerodynamics Laboratory and a year later was accepted to Canada’s first astronaut corps. Working with the NRC and the Canadian Space Agency, Bjarni helped develop and design satellites and fluid dynamics projects, but his primary focus was vibration isolation systems. In 1997 he served as payload specialist aboard the shuttle Discovery and after returning to Earth remained active in Canadian aviation.

Clifford McEwen – Starting his military flying career in 1916, Clifford McEwen joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and then transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. After flying most of the war in Italy as a scout pilot, McEwen went on the join the Canadian Air Force in England where he served as part of the Air Board and the inter-war Royal Canadian Air Force. When war broke out again McEwen was promoted from Group Captain to Air Commodore where he worked to establish Canadian authority over aerial operations while conducting antisubmarine warfare.  McEwen went on to be promoted to Air Vice-Marshall and used his outstanding leadership skills and discipline to boost morale and improve performance within the RCAF.

Shirley Render – With a passion for aviation and history, Shirley Render is one of Canada’s foremost aviation historians and a leader in the stewardship of this country’s aviation heritage. Soon after volunteering at the Western Canada Aviation Museum Shirley was sitting on the board, running the quarterly newsletter and curating its exhibits. After earning an MA in History, she wrote two influential books: No Place for a Lady and Double Cross. In 1990 she entered politics, being elected as the MLA for St Vital. She served in positions as Legislative Assistant and Minister of Consumer & Corporate Affairs. Following politics, she returned to the Museum as Executive Director and Curator in 2002. Under her leadership the struggling museum was revitalized which culminated in its re-design as the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada.

The Red Knight – During its twelve-year run, seventeen different pilots flew as the Red Knight for over 600 air show appearances – making the Royal Canadian Air Force Training Command’s solo performer second only to the Snowbirds for number of performances flown by a military aerobatic display team. The team is equipped with their venerable Canadair CT-114 Tutors decked out in Day-Go red. The team has performed in each of Canada’s 10 provinces and the Yukon and have made appearances in the Bahamas and in the United States.
