2022 Sarnia, Ontario Fly-In
popular summer event

Report and photos by Gord McNulty,
CAHS National Vice President
posted October 2022

Sarnia’s Chris Hadfield Airport was a lively scene on August 13 as aviation fans enjoyed a fly-in/drive-in open house hosted by Chapter 7 of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association.

Norseman CF-JIN looked good in the wartime colours of the RCAF at Sarnia Aug. 13, 2022
A nicely restored Noorduyn Norseman CF-JIN, in the all-yellow wartime colours of the Norseman in RCAF service, was on prominent display. The partnership of enthusiasts who recovered this vintage bushplane in the Red Lake, Ontario, area and flew it to Sarnia in 2018 hope to have it flying in 2023. I was advised the aircraft will be ready for flight once necessary brake work has been completed.

Check the September 2021 report in the CAHS e-newsletter archive for background on CF-JIN and a second Norseman, CF-KAO. It will require a long restoration that will begin after JIN is completed.

A surprise among the wide variety of aircraft to arrive was a nifty, about 80 per cent scale Spitfire replica, C-FUXM, flown in from Waterloo, ON by air show pilot Trevor Rafferty. The beautifully finished aircraft, powered by a 260 horsepower Honda-built V6, attracted plenty of attention.  An award winner, it was named “Best in Show” by the Replica Fighter Association at Oshkosh in July 2019.

Canadian Space Agency ‘retired’ astronaut and Sarnia native Chris Hadfield was once again very busy signing books for attendees who enjoyed a great day at the airport.
