The Inaugural Meeting of our new CAHS Chapter

Story by Robert Galway
CAHS Georgian Bay

posted December 2024
It is a distinct pleasure in my capacity as acting Director, to report on the activities of the newly minted Chapter in the Canadian Aviation Historical Society Community.

The Georgian Bay Chapter has just completed its first Fall season of meetings, and full credit is due to Robert Winson in achieving this remarkable milestone. The chapter, while still small in size, has managed to hold three meetings in September through mid-November 2024. These were held in the Conference Room at the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) #146, in Barrie, Ontario.

The most recent meeting on Saturday November 16th., sketched out a tentative schedule for the 2025 Calendar year in which it is planned to hold six "In Person" meetings at the Legion, as well as two Zoom sessions. The two Zoom sessions will be held in the winter when driving is a challenge, and in the mid-summertime, when Golf and the Cottage season dominate most calendars.

While Robert Winson continues to provide significant financial support which helps defray the Legion rental, it has been decided to establish a "Landing Fee" for each upcoming session. As the roster grows, the potential to convert this to an 'Annual Dues' levy will be revisited.

At the conclusion of the short business agenda, Robert Galway presented 1" Video, as an alternative to a minute of silence, given that we were meeting at the RCL, and it was still Remembrance Day week. The video was an outline of the Cairns of Lac Seul, erected by the Royal Canadian Legion #139, commemorating the nine lives lost in WWII of residents of the Lac Seul and Hudson/Sioux Lookout area of NW Ontario. One of whom, Thomas Roland Mellish, was a pilot for Starratt Airways & Transportation Company, (SAT)

Following that short submission, Robert Galway then filled the remaining time with a recently completed presentation on Starratt Airways entitled: "How Robert W. Starratt Grew Wings (1926-1941)".
