Family, Fun and Flight event at the
Medicine Hat Municipal Airport
July 22, 2024

Story and Photos by Wes Kraus,
CAHS Medicine Hat Chapter President

posted August 2024

The organizers of the Family, Fun and Flight invited our Medicine Hat Chapter to take part in this year’s event, as we have in the past. A booth was assigned to us with our neighbours being the Heritage Resources Working Group (HRWG) of the City of Medicine Hat.

A brief search around town secured a collapsible canopy that was augmented by a member who also brought his canopy. These provided shade from the sun and aided in keeping us cool over the course of the day. Tables and easels were supplied by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 17, Robertson Memorial. Coolers, water, ice and beer (nonalcoholic) were supplied by the chapter.

Set-up went well with magazines, books, artwork (silent auction item) were spread out for visitors. The RCAF 100th flag and the RCAF ensign were proudly displayed along with the movie poster of our event in April. Since we were next to the HRWG, who we have been working with to preserve the Wind Vane (Wind Tee) from No. 34 Service Flying Training School (SFTS), a suitable description of the air base and wind vane was on display. The silent auction artwork, Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8 two-seat reconnaissance biplane, was donated by one of our members, Mr. Rick Pollock. Congratulations to Devan Blacklock of Medicine Hat who won the auction.

The weather forecast was for very hot temperatures, (34 C) so we prepared ourselves for a long day. The set-up at 11:00am went very smoothly with gate open at Noon. There was an initial rush of people who were booking afternoon sightseeing flights through Super T Aviation. We had numerous visitors to the booth with lots of interest in our Chapter.  A brief lull in spectators in the afternoon was replaced by a huge influx who were ready to see the short airshow.

The show included the Northern Stars Aerobatic Team, the Yellow Thunder Harvard, and a Halo Helicopter demo. There was also the Bomber Command Museum of Canada Bristol Hercules engine run-up. Numerous static displays included local and regional emergency services equipment, as well as, several custom built and historic aircraft. There was a remote controlled aircraft model display, some vintage vehicles, and a good number of local food trucks who served amazing menus.

The event was organized by the Dave Rozdeba Memorial Airshow Committee and was sponsored by the City of Medicine Hat Community Vibrancy Program as we as numerous local and regional organizations.

We look forward to the Next Family, Fun and Flight in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
