The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association has lost one of its three founding members in Leonard (Len) Fallowfield.
Len passed away peacefully on November 2 at the age of 90. Len enjoyed many years flying a Harvard and along with his wife, Ila, was a longtime fixture at the CHAA hangars in Tillsonburg and previously Woodstock, Ontario.
Len fulfilled a lifelong dream in 1976 by earning a pilot’s license. He actively participated in the Woodstock and Tillsonburg flying clubs, and acquired part-ownership of Harvard Mk. 2 C-FMTX/3191.
As described by Linda Brimson in The CHAA Story, Len joined Harvard pilots Norm Beckham and Bob Hewitt --- originally known as “the Woodstock boys” --- to establish the all-volunteer CHAA in 1985.
Len especially enjoyed Harvard formation flying at the annual EAA air show in Oshkosh. As his obituary stated, he loved to share the joy of flight, taking friends and family members on unforgettable journeys through the skies.
Len and Ila were dedicated CHAA volunteers. Len greatly missed Norm and Bob but was proud of the CHAA’s impressive growth. He remained active until recently selling 50/50 tickets at members’ meetings; Ila served as bookkeeper from 1987 to 2014.
Len was a gentleman. His warm smile and infectious spirit will be sorely missed by his CHAA colleagues. He leaves behind Ila, family members and many friends.
A large gathering of family and friends attended the memorial service for Len at the Church of the Epiphany in Woodstock on November 30. In a fitting and impressive tribute, five Harvards flew a missing man formation.
