CAHS Convention 2004
Canada’s Air Forces @ Eighty - 80 Years Of Traditions and Service Of Canada’s National Air Forces

The 2004 CAHS Annual General Business Meeting and Conference is almost here!

To mark the 80th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Canadian Aviation Historical Society (CAHS) has partnered with the Office of Air Force Heritage and History and Library and Archives Canada (formerly the National Archives of Canada and the National Library of Canada) to sponsor CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY, an historical symposium that runs from 31 March through 4 April 2004 in Ottawa.

CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY will be held in the Auditorium of Library and Archives Canada. Through individual papers and panel presentations, CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY will probe more than 90 years of Canadian military aviation — from the formation of the Canadian Aviation Corps in1914, through the events and personalities of the two World Wars and Cold War, to Canada’s Air Force in the New Millennium. In addition to the rich history of the former Royal Canadian Air Force and current Air Command, the records of the previous air arms of the Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Navy will also be explored. Both those who have made Canadian aviation history and those who currently study Canada’s military aviation scene are well represented in the program. In addition to the formal presentations, events will include a book fair, a pre-conference workshop on archival sources and methodologies for Canadian aviation research, a private reception and tour of the Canada Aviation Museum, and a formal banquet at the historic RCAF Officers’ Mess in Ottawa.

CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY will incorporate all the regular CAHS activities ‘embedded’ within its full program of speakers and tours; including a Directors’ and Chapter Presidents’ Meeting, the CAHS Annual General Business Meeting, and the presentation of CAHS awards at the formal banquet.

Planners of CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY realize that many CAHS members are on a limited budget. When you look at the full program and arrangements, you’ll recognize the real value for money that we have delivered!

CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY offers two convenient fee structures, helping to make it within the reach of most budgets. Offering the best value is the Full Registration Fee of $175.00 Cdn. This gives you the archival workshop, three and a half days of historical seminars with all coffee breaks and lunches Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Thursday night reception and tour of the Canada Aviation Museum, and Saturday evening’s banquet at the historic RCAF Officers’ Mess (a $245.00 value if purchased separately) – Wow! Alternatively, you can purchase any combination or number of Day Passes (which provide admission to that day’s seminars, and include all coffee breaks and lunches, when applicable), or separate tickets to the Thursday night reception and tour of the Canada Aviation Museum, and Saturday evening’s banquet at the historic RCAF Officers’ Mess. (See the Schedule of Fees on the Program and Registration Form for specific costs.)

Accommodations have been arranged only steps away from Library and Archives Canada at the Albert at Bay Suite Hotel. Each newly-renovated, standard one bedroom suite includes two double beds, a spacious living room (many with a pull-out couch), a bathroom, and a large, fully- equipped kitchen. With double-occupancy, the rate ($125.00 Cdn per night with parking) represents a comparable room cost to those of recent CAHS Conventions, but delivers much more!

We have a couple of other enticements to offer you! If it has been several years since your last visit to the Canada Aviation Museum, you will want to see some of its recent acquisitions – a Messerschmitt Bf.109F, a McDonnell Douglas CF-18B, and a Fairey Firefly FR.1, to name just a few – and newly-restored aircraft (the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c. and Nieuport 12). And dinner at the historic Royal Canadian Air Force Officers’ Mess in Ottawa offers another museum tour; its walls are covered in historical photographs, paintings and artefacts. We had hoped to be able to announce here the name of our distinguished guest at this dinner too. Instead, watch for the announcement on the Convention pages of the CAHS website.

Make your plans now to attend CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY. Complete the enclosed Registration Form and Schedule of Fees and forward it with your cheque today!
